  11.
  12. Since 1852, when Massachusetts enacted the first compulsory
  13. school attendance law, two schooling traditionsone public, one
  14. private-have become mainstays in American education.  A new
  15. statistical report from the National Center for Education
  16. Statistics provides an overview of basic private school data
  17. primarily for the school years 1980-81 through l985-86.  PRIVATE
  18. SCHOOLS IN THE UNITED STATES: A STATISTICAL PROFILE, WITH
  19. COMPARISONS TO PUBLIC SCHOOLS, a baseline historical document,
  20. gives priority to those studies that either compare public and
  21. private schools or make it possible to compare several private
  22. school subgroups, or both.  The report uses national data with
  23. sample sizes sufficient to draw reliable national estimates.
  24.
  25. The report has estimates and trends for private schools; number
  26. and characteristics of private school students, teachers, and
  27. other staff; curriculum, resources, and student outcomes;
  28. national data on parental choice; and a review of upcoming NCES
  29. private school research efforts.
  30.
  31. Highlights include:
  32.
  33. o    In the mid-1980s, private elementary and secondary schools
  34.      accounted for approximately 25 percent of all schools,
  35.      between 12 and 13 percent of all students, and about 14
  36.      percent of all teachers in the United States.
  37.
  38. o    During the first half of the 1980s, the number of private
  39.      schools increased by 14 percent.
  40.
  41. o    Eight out of 10 private schools had a religious orientation,
  42.      and about 85 percent of all private school students attended
  43.      schools with a religious orientation.
  44.
  45. o    Catholic schools enrolled about 60 percent of all private
  46.      school students.
  47.
  48. One interesting note:  At least two-thirds of all secondary
  49. teachers in public and private schools indicated that their
  50. colleagues shared their beliefs and values on school mission, the
  51. school staff maintained high standards of performance, and
  52. cooperative effort existed among staff.  Despite these shared
  53. appraisals, significantly fewer public than private school
  54. teachers gave good ratings on school spirit and a sense of
  55. familial bond within the school.
  56.
